Imaginary Journeys story competitions

The story competitions have been set up to encourage young writers and storytellers to make use of old plots and story motifs in imaginative and original new ways. Every year, a different plot or motif will be chosen and young people are invited to create their own tales that retain the underlying pattern. Entry is open to all children under 12. Prizes are given to the most imaginative re-interpretations as well as for skill in language and storytelling. Winning entries will be published on the site.

Young writers and storytellers

We have purposely included the term ‘storytellers’ as well as writers in the descriptions. The focus of the competition is at present on written tales. In future, we will also introduce a category for told stories recorded on suitable media.

Able Writers Workshops

The competition was first set up for participants in the Able Writers Workshops organized for children from groups of primary schools around the country by the poet, Brian Moses. Various professional writers and poets work for full days with talented young writers to improve their skills, which can then be shared with other children in schools. Teachers interested in this scheme can e-mail Brian Moses
